Design I always welcome client’s participation before beginning a design as they will offer valuable ideas, perspective and inspiration for the artist. Working with you and being mindful of the particular architecture and function of the building, interior space and consequent light, is how I find a creative direction with each project. If you wish to incorporate coloured or stained glass into a new building at the design stage, consulting an experienced glass designer as early as possible will help achieve the best outcome. This is because the project becomes more of a collaboration, the architect can contribute in the creative process and everyone feels more involved. Every idea can be worked through allowing time for deeper consideration and beneficial alterations can be included before the glass is finally made. When working with coloured glass in buildings we are actually working with light. In all projects we use the very best handmade glass which is either made in England, Europe or America. Each piece of this beautiful glass sheet is an artwork in itself and allowing the glass to shine and work its magic is how I work. While working in England we created many large-scale installations and stained glass domes for buildings across the Middle East. Just imagine how these had to be built to the highest safety standards, to withstand prolonged, intense heat and gravity. As stained glass is a functional part of the architecture, as well as an aesthetic element, structural integrity and strength must always come first and foremost. This is why choosing an experienced design team, who communicate well at every stage is so important for clients and architects.
Stained glass restoration & conservation My first of many conservation projects was working on restoring every window in Tower Bridge, London, in the 1980’s. Stained glass conservation and restoration needs highly specialized assessment, with an understanding of how the work was originally constructed and all factors which have contributed to any deterioration. We are able to assess the condition of your glass and explain in detail what is happening. If you require a written condition report this will include assessment of each window with photographic records, reasons for of any damage, the best solutions for restoration and cost estimates. Written reports assist religious communities in fundraising for restoration work, particularly if the stained glass is of historical value and significance. We can also explore and advise on the best methods of protection, where necessary. Much of New Zealand’s beautiful, early ecclesiastical glass is in excellent condition as it was originally made in England then shipped out for installation. Some more recent glass made in New Zealand however, has not been designed or constructed so well. Many Church windows have also been poorly double glazed for protection which can cause damage to both glass and joinery due to water damage. We have dealt with many situations successfully and it is always wonderful to see these projects through to completion. Please feel welcome to contact me if you have any questions regarding stained glass restoration or conservation.
